💭 Your inner hermit wants a word

Do you have a hermit within?

One that you tend to resist because it would inconvenience your world, so full as it is with 'doings'?

I do.

But sometimes we just know it’s time to sink into a little hermit mode, right? Late January does that for me. We took down our tree yesterday. The exterior festivities are fading, and now it all feels a little… well, January. There's an emptiness that lingers in the absence of the jubilation and merry-making. Go into the emptiness my hermit says. I resist. Not quite yet.

The hermit’s wisdom is born from emptying... of distractions, of ego, of the need to be in charge. He sees into the emptiness and illuminates divine gifts. Like the mystics, when go into the wild emptiness we return with new awareness. Christ retreated into the wilderness often, praying and emptying himself.

Yet it's so natural to resist!

So, here’s your gentle nudge for today: don't judge or overthink the empty space that the fading holiday memories are opening up, and trust your inner hermit to be the perfect guide to reconnect you with the divine.

TO THE FILLER-UPPER: Just a reminder that you don't have to fill every empty space. There's wisdom in the stillness, trust yourself enough to listen.

Full of emptiness

Gifts of the hermit archetype. Pádraig Ó Tuama’s new book Kitchen Hymns reckons with the empty. The way of emptiness teaches us to hear. On self-emptying, selflessness and kenosis. You are the empty awareness. Grace fills the empty spaces but requires a void.

SOMETHING TO DO MORE OF

Trust your inner hermit

Wandering with your inner hermit into the emptiness isn’t about withdrawing—it’s about reconnecting with the quiet wisdom that’s been drowned out by the noise of daily life. In that stillness, you can:

  • Reconnect with your spiritual ‘knowing.’
  • Expand your self-awareness.
  • Tune in to inner wisdom and guidance.
  • Find light in the darkness.
  • Uncover what’s been hidden.
  • Rediscover your truest self.

But here’s the challenge—when faced with emptiness, we don't trust our inner guide. And we're a little impatient. We rush to fill the void with distractions: endless scrolling, snacking, binge-watching. Why? Because we feel unsettled. It reminds us we’re not in control, and that’s uncomfortable.

Yet, what if the emptiness isn’t something to avoid but a path to explore? What if, instead of filling every gap, you let your inner hermit lead you into the quiet, trusting it holds exactly what you need?

INNER GOLD
The emptiness is not
empty. It's not to be avoided
I trust that it's full of
what I've been longing
to hear... the sweet
voice of Holy Spirit.

A storm is coming. I've been feeling it in my bones. More metaphorically than literally. But nature has a way of obliging the inner landscape, shaping the outer reality to match. I woke up to the news alerts in my inbox: "Major atmospheric river storm barreling toward California: ‘Prepare for the worst’," and "California Braces For 'Biggest Storm of the Year'." Right on cue, February's full moon on Wednesday is living up to one of her lesser known names: Storm Moon. No one's looking forward...

It feels like springtime on California's Central Coast, where I’ve set down my roots... lightly, like a tent staked in soft earth... for the next few weeks. I've been excited because the weather is pretty good for hiking. As I look up the Santa Ynez mountains, the trails are calling. But here's the thing, finding the right trailhead around here is really challenging me. Stories, myths and wisdom writings talk a lot about the path and the journey, but no one talks about the trailhead. Often...

Hello dear friends, I find myself on a flight back to the Pacific Northwest, a place that always feels like home. My month in New York City visiting family unexpectedly became a kind of pilgrimage, wandering through so many churches, each with its own story and mystery (almost all of them very empty). It’s been a wonderful treat, but I’m looking forward to home where the fresh pine air recharges my soul. I’m ready to relax into a roaring fire that pushes back against the rainy days. Soon I’ll...
