🥳 Make a joyful noise

Hello and Happy New Year my friends! I hope it’s a year overflowing with blessings of peace, joy and health.

As I write this, our twinkling tree still fills the apartment with holiday vibes—a happy reminder that Christmas didn't end on December 25th. Far from a one-and-done holiday, the joyous season is in full swing! And it's shifted from the quiet, soulful preparation of Advent to a more jubilant and celebratory note. It's time to make a joyful noise.

Christmastide tends to be overshadowed by the excitement of New Year's Eve festivities. But there's still a place for the rich spiritual season that extends the joy of Christmas for 12 days through Epiphany (though the celebration *really* lasts until Candlemas on February 2).

I want to start 2025 by encountering Spirit in the unfolding days of Christmastide...in the celebration of renewal that follows the quiet, hopeful waiting of Advent. This season reminds me that God is tabernacled within our hearts. He calls us to notice.

Here's a question for you: How might you pause and linger in this liminal time as the magic of Christmas gives way to the rhythm of everyday life?

TO THE FRIEND WHO WONDERS: You’ve been trying to understand yourself, but clarity comes when you turn to the Source of all. In knowing the greater, you’ll remember who you've always been.

SOMETHING TO LET GO OF

The need to move fast

These days between Christmas and Epiphany create a space for us to do the opposite of what the world is doing—to slow down when everything else is moving fast. Just now, pause. Savor the liminality that Christmastide provides. What if you allowed this time to be different?

Try not to rush toward the next thing. Just now, pause. Take a deep breath and linger at the altar within. Let yourself be gently held by time, rather than pushed along by it. In this lingering, a deepening connection with the divine can emerge—a peaceful connection that reminds you of what truly matters.

So today, step into the holy in-between, and savor the stillness that Christmastide offers. You don’t need to move fast. Life, grace and love will wait for you here.

A storm is coming. I've been feeling it in my bones. More metaphorically than literally. But nature has a way of obliging the inner landscape, shaping the outer reality to match. I woke up to the news alerts in my inbox: "Major atmospheric river storm barreling toward California: ‘Prepare for the worst’," and "California Braces For 'Biggest Storm of the Year'." Right on cue, February's full moon on Wednesday is living up to one of her lesser known names: Storm Moon. No one's looking forward...

It feels like springtime on California's Central Coast, where I’ve set down my roots... lightly, like a tent staked in soft earth... for the next few weeks. I've been excited because the weather is pretty good for hiking. As I look up the Santa Ynez mountains, the trails are calling. But here's the thing, finding the right trailhead around here is really challenging me. Stories, myths and wisdom writings talk a lot about the path and the journey, but no one talks about the trailhead. Often...

Do you have a hermit within? One that you tend to resist because it would inconvenience your world, so full as it is with 'doings'? I do. But sometimes we just know it’s time to sink into a little hermit mode, right? Late January does that for me. We took down our tree yesterday. The exterior festivities are fading, and now it all feels a little… well, January. There's an emptiness that lingers in the absence of the jubilation and merry-making. Go into the emptiness my hermit says. I resist....
